If you booked an itinerary from a US state or territory to another US state or territory and the itinerary has you taking a connecting flight through a foreign country, you do not need to be tested. Passengers should contact the airline regarding options for changing their departure date to allow time for a test, see if the airline has identified options for testing, or if there are options available for changing their flights to transit through a location where they can get tested before boarding their final flight to the United States.

Most viruses and other germs do not spread easily on flights because of how air circulates and is filtered on airplanes.

If both of you are healthy and feeling well, are practicing social distancing and have had no known exposure to anyone with COVID, touching, hugging, kissing, and sex are more likely to be safe. However, international travel poses additional risks, and even fully vaccinated travelers might be at increased risk for getting and possibly spreading some COVID variants.

Airlines must confirm the negative test result for all passengers or documentation of recovery before they board. If a passenger does not provide documentation of a negative test or recovery, or chooses not to take a test, the airline must deny boarding to the passenger. An antibody test looks for antibodies that are made by the immune system in response to a threat, such as a specific virus. Antibodies can help fight infections. Antibodies can take several days or weeks to develop after you have an infection and may stay in your blood for several weeks after recovery. Because of this, antibody tests should not be used to diagnose an active coronavirus infection. Use visual cues such as floor decals, colored tape, and signs to remind workers to maintain distance of at least 6 feet from others, including at their workstation and in break areas.

Consider these cues for passengers as well, such as at the bus entry doors. Use touch-free stations where possible. Make sure restrooms are well stocked with soap and paper towels. Federal testing requirements must be met to board a plane to the US. Some state and local governments may have similar or more restrictive testing requirements for air passengers arriving in their jurisdictions.

Always check and follow state and local recommendations or requirements related to travel in addition to federal requirements. Additional testing may be required for other procedures based on your symptoms.

Your provider will decide when this is necessary. Fully vaccinated people are also less likely to contract the coronavirus than unvaccinated people. However, a recent study shows that when fully vaccinated people do contract the coronavirus, they can still transmit it. COVID is still a risk. On July 27, , CDC released updated guidance on the need for urgently increasing COVID vaccination coverage and a recommendation for everyone in areas of substantial or high transmission to wear a mask in public indoor places, even if they are fully vaccinated.
